Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of the Newlands Decider — and South Africa's Pace Plans Just Changed

By NajamSports Team | October 24, 2026

Some news hits harder because of the timing. South Africa finally have Australia exactly where they want them — series level at 1-1, momentum from an innings win, a decider at Newlands — and now they have lost the one fast bowler whose comeback story had become the emotional centre of this series. Cricket South Africa confirmed on Saturday, October 24, that Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the third Test against Australia with a mild groin injury. It is the only change to the squad, and frankly, it is a big one.

What Happened?

Nortje pulled up in his fourth over of Australia's first innings in the second Test at Gqeberha — just 3.3 overs into his spell — and left the field with what was first described as a suspected groin injury. He did not bowl again in the match, which South Africa went on to win by an innings and 31 runs on Thursday. Scans on Thursday confirmed the extent of the injury, and CSA has now ruled him out of the final Test. No replacement has been named; the rest of the squad stays exactly as it was.

That last detail matters. This is not a case of South Africa flying in a fresh face. The answer to Nortje's absence has to come from the players already in the room — and that choice will tell us a lot about how coach Shukri Conrad reads the Newlands pitch.

South Africa Squad for the 3rd Test vs Australia

  • Captain: Temba Bavuma
  • Batters: Aiden Markram, David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Ryan Rickelton, Marques Ackerman
  • All-rounders: Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Senuran Muthusamy
  • Bowlers: Kagiso Rabada, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj
  • Wicketkeeper: Kyle Verreynne

The third Test starts on Tuesday, October 27, at Newlands in Cape Town, and runs to October 31. The series is locked at 1-1 after Australia won the first Test in Durban by 214 runs and South Africa answered with that innings victory in Gqeberha.

Why This News Matters

First, the human side, because it is impossible to ignore. Nortje had only just returned to Test cricket in Durban — his first Test and first-class appearance in more than three and a half years after a long run of injuries stalled his career. He bowled 40 overs in that comeback Test. To lose him again, after 3.3 overs of the next one, is genuinely cruel, and it is the kind of setback that tests a player's belief as much as his body.

Second, the cricket side. South Africa's pace attack in Gqeberha worked because it had layers: Kagiso Rabada making things happen, Marco Jansen hitting the deck, and Nortje's raw pace as the point of difference. Take Nortje out and the balance shifts. My reading is this: Gerald Coetzee is the closest like-for-like replacement — genuine pace, aggressive, built for a scrap — while Corbin Bosch offers control plus useful lower-order runs. Dane Paterson, on his home ground at Newlands, is the romantic pick and a very sensible one if the pitch offers seam movement. And do not rule out Keshav Maharaj returning as a second spinner if the surface looks dry.

Our Analysis: Who Should Take Nortje's Place?

If I am picking the side, I go Coetzee. Here is why: Australia's batting line-up, for all its quality, looked most uncomfortable in Gqeberha when the ball was coming at them hard and straight. Coetzee gives you that threat without changing the shape of the attack. Bosch is the safer, more rounded option — he holds an end, he bats — but a series decider is not the place to play safe. Paterson's home-ground record makes him a genuine contender, and if Newlands greened up, I would not argue with his selection either. What South Africa cannot afford is to pick a bowler who simply fills a spot; they need someone who changes the game the way Nortje was supposed to.

For Australia, the news is a small gift they will not admit to wanting. Their squad is unchanged, with Cameron Green and Josh Inglis back at full fitness, and they know the pressure now sits a little differently. South Africa won the second Test without Nortje for most of it, so this is not a fatal blow — but it does remove the one bowler Australia had spent the least time facing in this series, and therefore the one they had planned for least.

What Happens Next?

South Africa return to training on Sunday after a rest day, and the playing XI will be named closer to the toss on Tuesday. Watch the Newlands pitch report first — it will probably decide between Coetzee, Bosch, Paterson and Maharaj before any selection meeting does. The decider itself, October 27–31, is also a World Test Championship contest, so there are points on the line beyond pride.

This series has already given us a 214-run win, an innings win, and a comeback story cut short. The decider now has one more subplot: can South Africa finish the job without the fast bowler they had just welcomed back? I think they can — the Gqeberha win proved the attack has depth — but they will have to be smarter, not just faster, to do it.
