Bhuvi recalled for Bengaluru decider after Arshdeep's shoulder blow
By NajamSports Team | October 16, 2026

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 36, could play his first international in nearly four years — on his home IPL ground — if Arshdeep Singh fails a late fitness test.
The BCCI has added Bhuvneshwar Kumar to India's squad for the fifth and deciding T20I against West Indies, after Arshdeep Singh took a blow to his bowling shoulder during the fourth match in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The decider is at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Saturday, October 17, with the series locked at 2-2.
The call is effectively an emergency recall. Arshdeep's availability will be decided before the game based on his recovery, and Bhuvneshwar — who has not played for India since November 2022 — has been named as his direct cover. It is the kind of news that changes the shape of a decider: India lose a left-arm angle that won them the third T20I in Indore (3/44) and gain the country's most experienced swing bowler, on a ground he knows better than anyone in the squad.
What happened
Arshdeep was struck while batting in the final over of India's chase in Hyderabad. Hit by a short ball from Shamar Joseph, he looked in serious pain, could not continue, and retired hurt as India closed on 223/9 in 19.3 overs, losing by 24 runs. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday: Bhuvneshwar Kumar was added to the squad after Arshdeep Singh sustained a blow to his bowling shoulder during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad, and a decision on Arshdeep's participation for the final T20I will be taken prior to the game based on his recovery.

Arshdeep Singh's left-arm angle has been India's most reliable T20I weapon this series — his 3/44 sealed the Indore win.
The updated 16-man squad is: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The series context is as volatile as it gets: West Indies chased 250 in Ranchi — the highest successful chase in their T20I history — then posted 247/3 in Hyderabad behind Shai Hope's unbeaten 102, and India's bowling has leaked heavily in both defeats. I covered that Hyderabad shootout in full here: West Indies beat India by 24 runs in Hyderabad to level the series.
Why this recall matters
Bhuvneshwar is 36, but this is not a nostalgia pick. His IPL 2026 season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru — on this very ground — produced 28 wickets in 16 matches at an economy of 7.95, the second-highest tally in the tournament behind Kagiso Rabada, and a central role in RCB's back-to-back titles. Across the last two IPL editions he has 45 wickets, and he remains the highest wicket-taker among all Indian pacers in T20 cricket. Numbers like that are why he was already named in India's squad for the New Zealand T20Is starting October 22 — this recall just arrived a week early.
And Chinnaswamy needs exactly what he offers. This has been a batter's series: two record chases, 250 hunted down in Ranchi, 247 posted in Hyderabad. India's seamers have been the weak link — Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav are raw, Arshdeep's new-ball overs apart. Bhuvneshwar brings the one thing missing all series: new-ball swing and a death-overs brain. Evening dew in Bengaluru usually punishes the side bowling second, but a bowler who has taken 90 wickets in 87 T20Is does not need perfect conditions. My full breakdown of Saturday's contest is here: Hope's West Indies eye series steal in Bengaluru decider.

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium hosts the decider on Saturday — short boundaries, fast outfield, and dew that decides bowling plans.
My analysis
I will be honest: losing Arshdeep hurts more than the headlines will admit. He has been India's banker with the new ball this series, and his absence removes the only left-arm angle from the attack. But there is a counter-argument that I keep coming back to — India have been defending nothing. When West Indies chase 250 against you, the problem is not one bowler; it is the whole plan at the death.
That is why I actually like this recall if Bhuvi plays. His last international was nearly four years ago, which sounds alarming until you remember the last two IPL seasons happened in front of our eyes: swing up front, cutters at the death, economy under 8 in a 7.95 season on flat decks. He will not outpace Shai Hope — nobody will this week — but he can outthink him, and at Chinnaswamy, outthinking is the only bowling plan that has ever worked. My prediction: if Bhuvneshwar plays and India bat first, India take the series. If they bowl first in dew without him, West Indies' power-hitting chases anything under 230.
The Indore win — 223 defended, 14-run margin, my report here: India take 2-1 lead: 14-run win in Indore T20I — is the template. Early swing, disciplined middle overs, nerves of steel at the end. That was Arshdeep's game. Saturday may have to be Bhuvi's.
