Pathum Nissanka Ruled Out of Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026 — Lahiru Udara Named Replacement

Sri Lanka's ODI tri-series campaign has taken a serious hit before a single ball is bowled. I saw the Sri Lanka Cricket announcement land this afternoon, and the timing could hardly be worse — Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026, and the tournament starts in just three days.

What Happened?

On October 15, 2026, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed through an official media release that Nissanka will miss the entire ODI tri-series involving Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka (October 18–31, in Rawalpindi and Lahore). The reason is a left hamstring injury that has refused to clear — he still has not received medical clearance to return to competitive cricket. The injury first flared up during Sri Lanka's recent white-ball tour of England, where he reportedly aggravated it despite playing through discomfort.

To fill the vacancy, the selectors have called up Lahiru Udara, the domestic wicketkeeper-batter, as Nissanka's replacement in the 16-member ODI squad.

Latest Updates on Sri Lanka's Squad

  • Nissanka ruled out: SL's first-choice ODI opener misses the whole tournament — opener to replacement confirmed by SLC on October 15.
  • Lahiru Udara drafted in: a wicketkeeper-batter from Sri Lanka's domestic circuit who was already in the conversation as an opener option back when the T20I squad was picked earlier this month.
  • Series schedule stands: the tri-series opens with Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi on October 18, and closes with the final at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on October 31.
  • Kusal Mendis leads: he continues as ODI captain and will also keep wicket during the series.

Regular readers will remember this saga has been building for weeks. When Sri Lanka named their squad for the Pakistan tour at the start of October, Nissanka was included subject to medical clearance — a caveat that always suggested this announcement was coming. You can read my full look at that original squad here, and my tri-series preview with the full fixture list here.

Why This News Matters

This is not a like-for-like swap, and that is exactly what worries me from Sri Lanka's point of view. Nissanka has been Sri Lanka's most reliable white-ball opener — the man who walks out with the new ball and sets the platform. Losing him three days before the tournament guts the top order's experience. Udara may have piled up domestic runs, but stepping into an international tri-series against Pakistan and England, away from home, is a different universe. Kusal Mendis, Avishka Fernando and the rest of the top order now carry significantly more weight, and the pressure starts immediately in the October 18 opener.

Our Analysis

Honestly, I think this changes the complexion of the opening game. Pakistan — who have their own momentum after taking the T20I series 2-1 on this very ground — now face a Sri Lanka side forced to blood a replacement opener in a tournament opener, in foreign conditions. Pakistan's new-ball attack will smell blood in the first powerplay.

That said, it would be foolish to write Sri Lanka off. Mendis is in the form of his life — his unbeaten 87 off 48 balls dismantled Pakistan in the final T20I just two days ago. If he carries that into the ODIs and someone partners him well at the top, this injury may end up being a footnote. My honest reading: Sri Lanka are weaker on paper today than they were yesterday, but the gap is only as big as the top order lets it become. Watch the first 10 overs on October 18 — they will tell us everything.

Upcoming Matches

  • October 18, 2026: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka — 1st ODI tri-series match, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
  • October 31, 2026: Final — Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

Conclusion

Pathum Nissanka's hamstring has officially cost Sri Lanka their first-choice opener for the entire Pakistan ODI tri-series, and Lahiru Udara has three days to prepare for the biggest opportunity of his career. The official SLC announcement leaves no doubt — this is final, and the October 18 opener against Pakistan just got a lot more interesting.
